Seafood Festival in Morehead City, NC

One of the largest seafood festivals in the world, the North Carolina Seafood Festival, held annually at Morehead City Waterfront offers boatloads of bounty for the discriminating fish lover.

Highlights include the King Neptune Ball and a Softball Tournament. The festival contains an important message as well as a mandate to munch.

The non-profit organization of citizens and business people - which goes by the same name as the festival itself - sponsors the event with the intention to educate, promote and inform visitors about seafood and the seafood industry. There are multiple interactive exhibits and activities for children, with the aim of fun and education in mind. In an attempt to carry on the North Carolina coastal heritage, traditional artists, craftspeople and musicians perform and sell their wares.

The obvious highlight of the festival is, however, fish. Visitors can load up on everything from raw oysters to shrimp burgers, and even enter a chowder cook-off. There are various stages with free music over the weekend, ranging from traditional sea music to country. Other events include a pageant, a photo contest and an array of sporting events. On Sunday morning, there is a blessing of the fleet that brings the bounty to shore.

Around the Coyote Fall Festival in Chicago, IL

Modelled on Parisian art fairs, Chicago's Around the Coyote Fall Festival showcases the talents of one of the nation's largest concentrations of visual artists, in the Wicker Park and Bucktown neighbourhoods north-west of the city centre.

The festival combines studio visits, gallery exhibitions and performances in a three-day extravaganza of art.

Around the Coyote began in 1990, when Parisian gallery owner Jim Happy-Delpech joined forces with local writers and gallery owners to draw attention to the large and diverse arts community in the Windy City, little known at that time even to locals. Two hundred artists and 20,000 visitors took part in the first Around the Coyote and over the years the event has grown to include 800 artists.

The Fall Festival's success in focusing attention on the artists living and working in these two picturesque neighbourhoods around the "Coyote" (a nickname for the 1930s skyscraper that towers over the area) has led to an additional Winter Festival in February.
